It's going to be the Magic Kingdom of Oz vs Dorothy in fifth grade's upcoming mock trial. We have many weeks ahead of planning a student created mock trial. We analyzed the crimes committed by Dorothy and she along with some of our favorite Wizard of Oz characters will have to defend her actions. Listed below are the cast of characters we brainstormed. Please think about the role you might like in our mock trial. Let me know what role you would like and why. Remember, we haven't totally shaped the idea of the trial yet, so things may alter slightly once our brains really get rolling. This is going to be an outstanding project!

Fourth grade has started work on their mock trial. After reading Dr. Suess' Yertle the Turtle, we have come up with a cast of characters to begin applying our knowledge of law in creating a mock trial. Below are the characters and the perspective they each have on the case.
Here are your chapter ten questions this week. Please type them first on a word document then copy and paste the word document into the comment section. (It's a good idea to type them first so you don't lose your thoughts in case of technical failure!)
1. How do you think Ryan’s experiences in this chapter may help him empathize with his father’s situation?
2. Ryan is sarcastic and cracks some jokes with one of his guards. Why do you think people try to be funny when they are in scary or stressful situations? 3. Kaylee tells Ryan that she has been put in the cell next to him so that she can get him to confess and then she can testify against him in court. Do you think she is telling the truth when she says she won’t tell what he says? Whose side do you think Kaylee is on?
Fourth and Fifth graders have spent a lot of time analyzing famous nursery rhymes (with a bit of a twist) to decide what crimes were committed. Although we worked in table groups with cards, you all expressed that you wanted your own copy of the funny rhymes. Here they are. Enjoy!!!
A sleepy koala bear wants to climb to the top of a fruit tree that is 10 meters tall. Each day the bear climbs up 5 meters but at night, while asleep, slides back 4 meters. At this rate how many days will it take the bear to reach the top of the tree.
Questions for Understanding:
How tall is the tree? How far did the koala climb during the day? How far did the koala slip back at night? What does reach the top mean? Nudge or Hint: The answer is not ten days. Use the "Draw a Picture" strategy to solve this problem. Organize your thinking. This is how I might start: You can use the meter stick up the side of the tree to mark 5 meters up, then four meters down, and so on. Show your work and bring your picture to class next Friday!
Today, we transitioned from Constitutional law to looking at how our Constitution urges on our basic rights with regard to criminal law. After discussing the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor and dissecting our basic rights should we be charged with a crime, we analyzed a landmark case Miranda v Arizona. For homework, I've asked the children to think about this case and pretend to be the Supreme Court Justices that reviewed the case. The children are charged with deciding what to do with the case: uphold the Arizona's Supreme Court decision or reverse their decision. I have attached the summary we used in class. Please write a paragraph explaining your decision and why. Think about precedent and the US Constitution while making your decision. Next week, we'll share our thoughts and I'll tell you how the Supreme Court ruled.
