READING~ Reading Groups met this week to discuss the continued reading strategy of "deep" connections as well as identigy the story elements in their groups' story...setting, characters, problem, and solution... in our books.
WRITING~ We are currently writing a personal narrative. Students spent some time this last week looking at other narratives and discussing what would have made it a better piece, or what the writer did really well in it. We determined many of the pieces we felt that the writier needed to add more details. Our goal is to add a lot of details to our own narratives! We will finish our 1st draft of our personal narratives this week and begin to peer revise, peer edit, and have writing conferences with me.
Word Study~ We will be working with Sort 6 next week. Please have your child practice their words at home. They may use their cut out words to sort at home or help to arrange in ABC order. Math~ In math we have been working on estimating. We worked this week with estimating to the 10's place in numbers through the then thousands place. "Math Rotations" began this week as well! During "Math Rotations", students rotate to 4 different activities that are geared to that particular group of students. All students participate in an activity in Problem Solving, Current Skills, Review Skills, and Guided Group with me. Next week, we will extend the skill of estimating by estimating to other places in a number, not just the 10's. We will also begin to look for patterns in input/ output charts.
Word Study~ We will be working with Sort 4 next week. Please have your child practice their words at home. They may use their cut out words to sort at home or help to arrange in ABC order. Spellingcity.com is also a great resource. I have it linked on the right side of my blog with directions. I have programmed the weekly sort. The site offers many different games to make practicing the words fun. It will even give your child a spelling test!
Reading~ We have been focusing on making connections. We did have a mini-lesson this past week on "Surface Connections vs. Deep Connecitons". We discussed how it is important for our connections to help us better understand the characters or events in the story. We are also working to show our thinking on sticky notes as we are reading. Next week we will begin reading groups! I really enjoy this time of getting to read and discuss with the small groups!
Writing~ We just completed our first piece of writing which was an interview of another classmate. This really helped us get to know one another! We did take this piece through the writing stages of 1st draft, peer revisions, editing, conferencing with me, and finally publishing! We will begin our personal narratives next week!
Social Studies~ We have been studying the roots of our government. We learned that not only did we get the idea of democracy from Greece, but we copied some of their architecture (columns). We enjoyed reading about this in our Weekly Studies Newspaper. We will now take a closer look at our government, beginning with our local government.
