The Counseling Department
The focus of the counseling program is developmental and threefold: educational, preventive and need-based. A variety of skills are taught during bi-weekly lessons . Listed below are some of the topics covered through the counseling program:
Organization/study skills
Conflict management
Friendship
Peer pressure
Problem solving
Decision making
Anger management
Stranger safety
Bullying
Social skills
In addition to classroom lessons, counselors meet with individual students as needed. Small group counseling is also offered throughout the school year. Individual and group counseling is scheduled on an as needed basis.
Small Support Groups
Small groups are designed to provide additional support to students. Children may be referred to a small support group by a teacher, parent, counselor or administrator. Parental permission is required for small group participation.
Individual Counseling
Students can meet with a counselor for individual counseling. Individual counseling is solution-focused and designed to assist students in problem solving for a specific issue. Students can self refer to meet with a counselor. They can also be referred by a parent, teacher or administrator. Students are not required to have parent permission to meet with a counselor for an individual session. However, parents will be notified if a pattern of wanting to talk with the counselor is observed. Counseling is a voluntary and confidential service available to all students.
