February 2008

Star_taking_a_bow_animatedI want to thank everyone for attending conferences.  I really enjoyed the January conference as it allowed me to share with you the progress your children have made since August.  It is always great for me to be able to glow about your children, and to share goals with you so they will continue to grow throughout the remaining months.

February is going to be a very busy month!

Over the next few weeks, the students will be preparing for their journey back in time as they research about various historical figures from the past. The information went home on Thursday to explain all the details of the VIP project. Please plan to join us on March 7th for this memorable event!!

                                                                                             smiley fire

Also, this month the students will enjoy learning about Fire Safety from our neighboring fire department. Every Monday and Wednesday for 4 weeks, the students will receive valuable instruction about this important topic. The students will have homework to help them review the concepts they are learning at school. Please help your child by encouraging them to complete their homework!!

Heart_animatedValentines Day is also nearing and I will be sending a class list for Valentine cards on Monday.  We will exchange cards on Thursday, February 14th.  Please have your child decorate a box to use as a mailbox.  The box should have a slot large enough to receive cards that might have candy included.  Also, your child's name should be clearly written on the top of the box.  There should be a way to open the box as the children will have the opportunity to read their cards in school.  The box and cards may come to school on February 13th.    Please have the children write the names of their classmates, and their own names legibly.  You may use shoe, cereal or sturdy gift boxes.  Cover the box with foil, wrapping paper, or other material. The children may decorate their box any way they desire.  Please make sure your child has a Valentine for each student in the class.  We will be having a special snack in the afternoon

Six Flags Reading Minutes are due on February 15th. Each child who submits their form will have an opportunity to join our class at Six Flags one day this summer!

Please have your child turn in his or her permission form for the field trip to Chattanooga by February 22nd. I will be selecting chaperones for the trip next week. Don't forget that the medical form needs to be notarized BEFORE your child turns it in to me.

I look forward to a wonderful second half of the year! Thank you again for your continued support with helping your chid grow!!

Welcome Back!

Happy_new_year_3Happy New Year!! Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a delightful winter break and is now ready to get back in the routine. I have several important things to share with you. Please read the following information carefully. I look forward to working with you all the second half of the school year!

In math, we will be focusing on fractions and decimals. The children will be learning about equivalent fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers. We will also review the place value of numbers using decimals. This is a good way to review money skills by having your child add and subtract money amounts when they purchase something. Please continue to review multiplication and division skills with your child at home.

In science, we will be moving on to explore our unit on the Solar System. We will be doing research about the different planets. Please assist your child by allowing them to research some of their favorite planets at home. They are welcome to bring in pictures to share with the class. I am sure it will be an "Out Of This World" experience.

In social studies, the students will continue to learn about colonial times and the events that led up to the American Revolution. We will begin working on the VIP Tea this month in preparation for the big event in March. More information will come home soon!!

Conference_animated

Conferences this year will be held January 22-January 28th this year. The students will be dismissed 2 hours early for scheduling purposes. Letters will be sent home this Thursday indicating the day and time of your conference. Please let me know prior to Thursday at least 2 different days and 2 different times that will work best for you. I will try to accomodate as many people as possible so we can avoid conflicts. The conferences will also be coordinated with your child's siblings, if necessary. I will not be scheduling morning conferences since the students enter the room at 7:15 a.m. Report cards will be given to the parents during the conferences.

Information about our field trip to Chattanooga will come home during your conference. It is scheduled for April 3, 2008. I have had several parents voice an interest in going on the trip. We will draw names out of a basket the end of February to choose which parents are able to attend.

Thank you again for all of your support with the children! It has been a wonderful year so far. I look forward to meeting with each of you in a couple of weeks and finishing the school year with such a wonderful group of students and parents!!  Let me know if you have any questions regarding this information!

Each week I will post homework assignments, projects, and other important information about what is happening in our classroom. Please be sure to check the blog consistently for updates. Also, thank you to everyone who volunteered to assist in the classroom in some way throughout the year. I look forward to working together to make this a successful year for the students!
