MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Cobb County School Counseling program is to assist students in overcoming barriers that impede learning. The goal of all Cobb County Professional School Counselors is to implement a standards based comprehensive school counseling program that:

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! My name is Cindy Dorsey and I am a part-time counselor at Bullard Elementary School. I will be working with all second grade students. I work at Bullard on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday. I look forward to meeting you.
WELCOME TEAM
Teachers selected one male and one female student from each classroom to represent our Bullard "Welcome Team." Selected students were trained by counselors in small group settings.
Welcome Team Students are responsible for:
A. Greeting New Students
B. Giving new students a tour of the classroom and school
C. Explaining class rules, typical assignments, homework and "Specials"
D. Helping new students during the first few days and being available to answer questions

Week of August 30, 2010 "Meet & Greet" This lesson emphasizes the importance of following classroom rules. Students will learn and practice specific group rules. Students will learn the value of following important rules at school, home, and in the community. Students will also practice making introductions and learn how to welcome new students.
Week of September 13, 2010 "Beware of Strangers!" Students will learn safety rules and effective tools to stay safe from strangers. Students will also learn how to avoid common child lures.
Week of September 20, 2010: FALL BREAK - NO SCHOOL
Week of September 27, 2010: Counselors assist with 1st and 3rd grade COGAT Testing
Week of October 4, 2010: Counselors assist with 3rd and 5th ITBS Testing.
Week of October 11, 2010: Counselors assist with ITBS testing and make-ups.
Week of October 18, 2010: "Why I Won't Do Drugs!" To celebrate the theme of RED RIBBON WEEK students will view the video "Why I Won't Do Drugs" to learn why it is important to live a Drug-Free lifestyle. Students will discuss and illustrate healthy ways to enjoy time with friends and family.
Week of November 15, 2010: "Bullying & Betty Lou Blue" Students will discuss examples of bullying and ways to respond to bullies. Students will understand the motives of bullies and how to support a bully-free environment. The lesson concludes with a story about "Betty Lou Blue" and her bullying experiences.
Week of December 6, 2010: "The Meanest Thing to Say." Students will learn how bullying affects self-esteem and hurts feelings. Students will hear the story "The Meanest Thing to Say," by Bill Cosby. At the end of the story students will practice responding to bullying statements with Bill Cosby's special word....SOOOOOOO!
Week of January 3, 2011 "Froggy Learns about Arguing & Fighting." Students will learn how to get along better with others and how to communicate feelings. They will learn how arguments can get out of hand and ways to control temper.
Week of January 17, 2011 "Careers in the Classrom." Students will develop career awareness by brainstorming all of the many careers involved in building their classroom. Students will discuss the many tools required in particular careers.
Week of January 31, 2011 "Creative Study Skills" Students will learn fun, creative, and resourceful ways to learn information and to study effectively. Students will understand the importance of a positive attitude towards learning and studying.
Week of February 14, 2011 "Creative Study Skills" Part II: Students will practice creative and resourceful ways to learn information and to study effectively. (Mnemonic devices, acronyms, etc.)
Week of February 21-25, 2011 NO SCHOOL
Week of March 7, 2011 "We are All Different & Special." ASCA STANDARDS: PS:A2.3 Students will be able to recognize and demonstrate respect for individual differences. PS:A2.4 Students will recognize, accept, and appreciate ethnic and cultural diversity.
Week of March 21, 2011 "A Mountain of Manners." Students will view a power point reviewing manners and etiquette essential for cooperative learning and respect for others. Students will learn how social roles can impact their future.
Week of April 4-8, 2011 SPRING BREAK! Enjoy your time off with family and friends. Read some great books!
April 11-18, 2011 CRCT TESTING (Grades 3-5) No classroom guidance scheduled. Counselors are assisting with testing and make-ups for grades 3-5.

Week of April 25, 2011 "Too Much Teasing!" Students will be able to demonstrate respect for individual differences. Students will be able to differentiate between good teasing and bad teasing.
Week of May 9, 2011 "Teacher Appreciation." Book: "What if There Were No Teachers?" Students will listen to a story by Caron Chandler Loveless. Students will write appreciation cards to a favorite teacher. Thank you, Teachers for all you do!
Week of "You are Special." Students will be able to appropriately communicate own feelings towards someone special in their life.
Week of "Anger Control Beanbag Toss." Students will demonstrate appropriate ways to control anger while engaging in a game of beanbag toss.
Week of "Career Bingo." Students will familiarize themselves with sixteen careers while playing Career Bingo. Students will identify career characteristics and discuss ways to prepare for particular careers.
Week of "Color Your Careers." Students will learn how personality traits and personal skills are suited for different careers. Students will learn about sixteen different career clusters and identify careers they are interested in.
Week of "Hooray for Diffendoofer Day" CRCT Test Prep. Students will identify the main test taking skills and enjoy a testing story by Dr. Seuss.
