Happy Fall from Iveytown!
This is my favorite time of the year! Cooler weather, falling leaves, pumpkins, festivals, and of course, FOOTBALL! I hope you all are enjoying the season with your children and getting outside and loving this great weather!
Here is what's happening in Iveytown U.S.A!
Math: The class has really been working hard on several different concepts to wrap up the 9 week semester. We know how to count, add, and subtract money; tell elapsed time to the half and full hour; understand the place value of numbers to the ten-thousands place; Add and Subtract with and without regrouping! We have been busy!! Remember.. if your child comes home with a 2 or 1 on an assignment, please try to continue working on that standard at home with your child! We will test for the end of the 9 weeks next week! We will work on a study guide here at school.
Reading Workshop:
I am so excited to see the children starting to enjoy reading independently more since the beginning of school! They are very into meeting their goals for Accelerated Reading! We had 10 that met their September goal, and I am hoping to have even more in October! I have been administering DRA's (Reading Assessments), so the students have had a lot of good, independent reading time. We will begin our reading groups again next week. We are working on fluency and reading with expression! We are also learning that good readers use strategies when they read. One strategy that we are working on is making predictions and connections as we read! Continue to read with your children at home and have them fill out their reading logs. Remember.. it is due on Mondays!
Writing Workshop:
We are continuing to work on personal narratives in class. They have finished one piece called, "My Favorite Place". They are doing a fantastic job with their writing! I model a new skill daily and they have time to practice and incorporate it into their own writing. The students need to work on adding details to their writing and to expand their sentences! Look for more writing to piece to come home this month!
Science:
We are "rocking" with learning about rocks and minerals! The students are having a ball feeling, testing, and observing minerals! They know that all rocks are made of minerals and that Geologists have to look at the properties to figure out what type of mineral or rock it is. Next week, we will discuss the three types of rocks (Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary) and fossils!
Next week, we are back to our regular schedule!
Please return those conference confirmation slips as soon as possible! I am sending them out tomorrow!
